Competition rules

Location: Debrecen, Nagyerdei krt. 12, 4028,

Competition center: HALL Debrecen – Nagyerdei Stadium, northern event area

Date: 2026.03.29.

Purpose

The Debrecen Marathon aims to provide runners with an unforgettable experience while also being part of unique environmental research. The air quality and CO₂ emission measurements related to traffic restrictions during the event offer a unique opportunity for the city of Debrecen to demonstrate the climate protection benefits of traffic calming in a scientifically supported way. The measurements conducted by researchers at the University of Debrecen can lead to publishable results that can establish the basis for domestic good practice in sustainable urban event organization.

The University of Debrecen contributes to the development of universal science and Hungarian society with its multidisciplinary training, research and developments. Its mission is realized jointly by its lecturers, staff and students, with a commitment to quality, in cooperation with domestic and international partners. The development of sport and health also appears as a key strategic area in its mission statement. In this spirit, the idea of the Debrecen Marathon was born, which was dreamed up by the university's experts. The aim of the event is for the institution to promote sustainability, sport and, within this, the joy of running, by stepping outside its own walls, in cooperation with the city of Debrecen and the Ministry of Energy.

The University of Debrecen has recently become an international leader, as it is the first and so far only Hungarian higher education institution to be awarded the FISU Healthy Campus program platinum degree, a privilege granted to only 38 universities worldwide. This means that the institution's sports activities serve as a world-class example in the fields of competitive and recreational sports, facility development, as well as education and research. The University of Debrecen, together with the city of Debrecen, plays an active, physical activity-encouraging role in the lives of thousands of university and city citizens every day.

Organizer:  MSE Klaszter Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. The University of Debrecen's Employee Leisure and Health Programs Coordination Center also participates in the organization of the competition.

Competition Director: Dr. Evelin Takács
