At a sustainable pace!

Debrecen, as one of the most dynamically developing cities in Hungary, takes new steps every year to create a livable, sustainable and community-centered city alongside economic growth.

The urban Debrecen Marathon, which is planned to take place annually from 2026, fits into this endeavor, as it could not only function as a sporting event, but also bring comprehensive social, economic and environmental impacts to the city.

The marathon is not only a celebration of sport, but also a symbol of responsibility for the future. Our mission is to combine the joy of running with the values of sustainability, and to set an example for all participants in environmentally conscious thinking.

We reduce the event's ecological footprint with electric vehicles and low-carbon logistics, while encouraging our runners and spectators to choose public transport. We track and measure our carbon emissions, publish them transparently, and offset them where possible.

We collect PET bottles at the refreshment points to give them a new life through “Bottle-to-Bottle” recycling, and we provide glass-free refreshment with re-glasses. We also contribute to waste reduction with recyclable versions of trackside tapes, start numbers and chips.

We also break with the wasteful practice of event t-shirts: we don't have any mandatory, unnecessary t-shirts. The runner can decide for himself whether he wants a souvenir. The premium event t-shirt we offer is made exclusively from recycled materials.

At the start center, running shoes and leftover T-shirts are not wasted: after proper disinfection, they are given to those in need, so the power of sport directly helps the community. By involving local suppliers and minimizing food waste and packaging, we build sustainability into the entire event chain.

With our digital programs, we offer a paperless alternative, while also placing great emphasis on education: we encourage our participants to bring their own water bottle, and through their conscious decisions, we shape the future together.

In collaboration with our strong partners, we are building a system in which sports experience and environmental awareness go hand in hand. Our vision is a marathon that not only provides an unforgettable experience in the present, but also leaves a cleaner, more livable, healthier world for future generations.
